Martin Engseth

Oil Painter from Northern Wisconsin

Martin is a studio based landscape oil painter.  He began painting for pleasure in the 1990s and in 2013 began painting professionally. For him the process of recreating with his hand what lies before his eyes is one of moving from loose observation to that of touching and joining with a subject to represent both its willfulness and intent.

Besides painting, Martin has illustrated a book for the Minnesota Archaeological Society (The Archaeology of the Fish Lake Dam Site) and has finished a second for Armarium Press. He and his wife observe a simple bohemian lifestyle… living for art, chopping wood, carrying water and rejecting consumerism. As Henry David Thoreau wrote, “Man is rich in proportion to the number of things he can do without.
